Somewhere

SOMEWHERE

With Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius, Kristina & Karissa Shannon

Written & Directed by Sofia Coppola

With the awe-inspiring simple genius of the unforgettable Lost In Translation, expectations may have been a bit high for Sofia Coppola. This frustratingly bland portrait of a successful actor re-connecting with his young daughter tries too hard to illustrate the lead's boredom with his life. The insertion of the young girl into his routine is not particularly spectacular either, his inner enlightenment also not exactly blooming on the screen. The grating mood starts at the very opening with a static shot and a car passing the camera as it drives around a track, repeatedly. The naturalistic feel gives it some credence, but Jackass member Chris Pontius almost steals the show as Stephen Dorff's pal. If her intention was to give the viewer a look at how boring stars' lives can also be, it's not exactly something I'm interested in.

If there were extra features, I don't know if I would've wanted to bother seeing how this low energy experiment got put together for fear of being subjected to another session of so-what-ness.
If deeper hidden subtexts are supposed to be there, I didn't have the will to look for them.

Never thought I'd have such a negative reaction to something coming from a Coppola, but this highly disappointing movie sits pretty much, yes... Nowhere.
